About Anki

Anki is a program which makes remembering things easy. Because it's a lot more efficient than traditional study methods, you can either greatly decrease your time spent studying, or greatly increase the amount you learn.

Anyone who needs to remember things in their daily life can benefit from Anki. Since it is content-agnostic and supports images, audio, videos and scientific markup (via LaTeX), the possibilities are endless.
For example:

  • Learning a language
  • Studying for medical and law exams
  • Memorizing people's names and faces
  • Brushing up on geography
  • Mastering long poems
  • Even practicing guitar chords!

Features

Synchronization
Use the free AnkiWeb synchronization service to keep your cards in sync across multiple devices.

Flexibility
From card layout to review timing, Anki has a wealth of options for you to customize.

Media-Rich
Embed audio clips, images, videos and scientific markup on your cards, with precise control over how it's shown.

Optimized
Anki will handle decks of 100,000+ cards with no problems.

Fully Extensible
There are a large number of add-ons available.

Open Source
Because the code and storage format is open, your important data is safe.

"No other application, at least on the OS X platform, comes remotely close to Anki in terms of the number and power of features, flexibility in study, or implementation of spaced repetition."

K. M. Lawson

"I've been using Anki for two years now, and I just wanted to thank you personally for contributing to the single most obvious improvement in my quality of life. I'm not being hyperbolic: consistent use of Anki has opened more doors for me intellectually than I could have imagined two years ago. And being a poor student, I'll be forever grateful that you've provided this software open-source and free of charge."

Keldin, via email

"Uses a fantastic algorithm to help you keep a wealth of knowledge in your working memory for long periods of time."

Download Anki

Choose a platform from the left.

Download Anki for Windows

Installation

  1. Save the installer to your desktop or downloads folder.
  2. Double-click on the installer to run it. Anki will be installed to your computer.
  3. Double-click on the new Anki icon on your desktop to start Anki.

Upgrading

Upgrading is as simple as installing the new version over the old version, and your data will be preserved. Simply close Anki if it's currently running, then follow the steps in the Installation section above.

Alternate Version

The toolkit Anki uses has a bug that causes big slowdowns with Thai text. If you're experiencing this issue, please download the alternate version instead.

Notes

Internet Explorer 9+, Windows 8, and Norton Antivirus users: these products may display scary warning messages when new Anki versions are released, because they have not seen people previously downloading the new version. This misguided behaviour can be worked around:

Anki is not available on Windows RT, as the libraries Anki was built with do not currently support that platform. If you wish to use Anki on a Surface, you'll either need to buy a Surface Pro, or use AnkiWeb

Download Anki for Mac

Installation

  1. Save the file to your desktop or downloads folder.
  2. Open it, and drag Anki to your Applications folder or desktop.

Upgrading

Upgrading is as simple as installing the new version over the old version, and your data will be preserved. Simply close Anki if it's currently running, then follow the steps in the Installation section above.

Alternate Version

The regular download requires OSX 10.7. If you're unable to run it, an alternate version is provided for users on OSX 10.5 or 10.6. PPC machines are not supported.

Ubuntu/Debian

Download Anki for Ubuntu/Debian

After downloading the .deb file, use your package manager to install the program. It's highly recommended that you install Anki from this package instead of relying on the version distributed with your OS, as the packages in the official repo are often very out of date.

Fedora

Anki is available in Fedora, and can be installed with 'sudo yum install anki'.

Other Linux/BSD installations

Download Anki Source

After downloading and extracting the tarball, please see the README file for more information on the required dependencies and installation instructions.

Source

Stable releases are available on the Linux/BSD tab.

Development

To install the development version, either grab a tarball from my GitHub page, or install Git and then run the following command:

$ git clone git://github.com/dae/anki.git

Then please read README.development for further instructions.

The development version may be unstable. Unless you are actively working on Anki, please use the latest stable tarball instead.

Translating Anki

Please see this section of the manual for info on translating Anki into a different language.

iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch

Get AnkiMobile

AnkiMobile is a paid companion to the free computer program, for use on Apple devices. By purchasing the app, you help to support Anki's future development.

If you can't afford the app, you can still use AnkiWeb.

Android Devices

Get AnkiDroid

AnkiDroid is written by a separate group of people. As it was based off the free desktop code I make available, the AnkiDroid developers decided to make the Android version free as well.

Cell Phones

AnkiWeb can be used with almost any mobile with net access. It is optimized for low bandwidth so you won't have high data bills. You can learn more by signing up for an account and then locating the simple study link.

Blackberries

A port of AnkiDroid is available for Blackberry 10, and is in the Blackberry portal. There is no native client for older Blackberry devices, but you can review with AnkiWeb.

Maemo

Anki 2 can be run with Simple Debian. Please see this forum thread for more info.

You can also review with AnkiWeb.

Windows Phone/Windows Mobile/Windows RT

No offline client is available, but you can review with AnkiWeb. As I have my hands quite full already, there are no plans for a client for these platforms in the near future.

Nintendo DS

No offline client is available, but you can review with AnkiWeb.

Sony PSP

No offline client is available, but you can review with AnkiWeb.

Palm devices

No offline client for Anki is available, but you can review with AnkiWeb.

There is an old Palm program called "Anki" that has no relation to this project.
